OPENING NIGHT

Sat, Oct 4 / 10 dollars at the door / 8 pm

We're honored to kick off this year's fest in collaboration with Craig Baldwin's Other Cinema, at Artists' Television Access. We’ll look back at three fan-favorite shorts from past editions of DFFO before screening the U.S. premiere of Mann’s Sparks, by Oakland's own Ryland Walker Knight, who'll be in attendance to introduce his collision of Michael Mann’s iconic filmography with Beach House’s album Depression Cherry.

Mann's Sparks

Ryland Walker Knight

Oakland

Marrying Michael Mann's full-throttle filmography with the seminal album ""Depression Cherry"" by Beach House, Mann's Sparks is a dreamy evocation of endless cycles of desire and destruction in the form of a culture-jammed long-form music video.

Director Ryland Walker Knight is a writer and filmmaker from Oakland who was a 2024 Sundance Institute Native Lab Fellow and Vimeo Staff Pick recipient, and will be in-house to introduce the film.

DFFO Mash-Up Retrospective

Preceding Mann's Sparks are three fan favorites from our first four years that also play in the reclaimed/repurposed/archival/found footage end of the cinematic spectrum.
